1st Dive With Detector

I went back to the lead hole today, only this time I brought the detector. Unfortunately conditions had deteriorated and visibility was only a foot. There was also the beginnings of a ground swell starting up, but I had to see what the machine would act like(headphones, etc) so in I went.

It turned out to be lots of fun even though I couldn’t see and the waves kept pushing me around. The biggest problem of the day came from my dive gear. My snorkel kept falling off and my mask kept filling up with water. I think I could use some extra weight on the dive also. Another thing was that my headphones kept falling off when I would dive down, I'm gonna have to find a fix for that.

If anybody has some tips or gear recommendations, Id love to hear from you.

This is my take for today, all of it fanned out. I'm calling it a successful first run. Happy Hunting.

Congratz on the lead. Gold and Silver next time for sure. I hope ! Good luck and again very good first dive.

Nice pile of lead! :ptongue:Glad to see I am not the only one. Check my big carp post I found a bunch of duck decoy weights.

This is my second year and hear is what I have found.
My first underwater machine: the head phones fell off all the time they were very buoyant and kind of floated off my head.:frown:

I now have a different machine it has a pistol grip and a single speaker (see my avatar) I tuck the speaker in my hood (cold water) or under my mask strap
(Warm water)
The pistol grip is good and bad

Good:
1. It is compact and easy to see the light and meter. The pipe handles have me too far from the action. But you can make short ones.
2. Doesn’t get tangled as easy as a pipe handle
3. The single speaker has never come out of my hood or strap.:bthumb:

Bad:
  • I think the coil is too small I think the bigger the coil the deeper it “see’s” maybe someone else can chime in on that.
  • My arm gets tired much easier with out the forearm brace.
  • The unit I have has only one control knob. But I did everything anyway!

Leaky mask: Strap it on tight some of my masks have to be very tight to not leak.

Snorkel falling off: I am not sure what kind of a set up you have. Ahh mmmm Duck tape? RED GREEN RULES!!!!

Tip: don’t buy the Kevlar Diving gloves! Mikey posted that his wore out I didn’t listen :banghead:and got a pair they are junk now and I should have listen to Mikey:bow: $60.00 out the snorkel tube after a half a dozen dives.

I have tried the yellow ones with the rubber drizzled on them (lobster gloves) and they go fast too.

I am now trying some mechanics gloves they are gray with blue rubber coating the first pair was too tight and made my hands go numb. But seem very durable.

I have heard of Kevlar coated mechanics gloves and I plan to try them in extra large next.

Thanks Guys for the replies.

smoking joking, thanks for taking the time to drop all the info. What you do with your speaker gave me an idea. Maybe I'll try hanging my headphones around my neck next time. One time my phones fell off and I could still hear the signal pretty good untill the current took them out of reach.

I need to get a new mask, I'm using a 6 year old body glove. The straps wont stay tight and I think the nose valve leaks. Might pick up a new snorkel while I'm at it. I will definitely tape that sucker down next time. If the headphones keep acting up they might get some tape to. :pwink:

Generally the bigger the coil the greatter the depth. Tighten that mask. Snorkels are a necessary pain in the butt, or side of the head as it were. Headphones while diving.... My dual field headphones suck for diving, they don't stay on worth a cr'p! The fisher 1280 X on the other hand are awesome! Perhaps because Mel Fisher helped set their design standard. Anyone from Whites take note, The headphones on the Dual Field Suck for scuba diving! Rant . As for gloves... When I finally find a tough brand I will tell everyone. Glad you got to go dive.

I usually wear gloves when I detect, and have been through a "few" pairs that weren’t up to the task. I found a pair in lowes hardware section that has held up really well so far. I also have a pair of mountain bike gloves that is surviving bike use and water hunting very well. I cant find a link to the ones I found at lowes, but this is a good spot for MTB stuff. My MTB gloves are $20 661's

I have has some success with regular neoprene gloves that I coated the finger pads with Aqua Seal glue...

They make some really sweet snorkels these days. Light, flexible and self-sealing so you can actually breathe through them upon surfacing. Of course, they come at a price! :yikes:
I rarely wear one while diving freshwater but always do in salt.

When I use to dive......I just wore a pair of old leather gloves ( freshwater ) and added at least 40-45 lbs of weights.

I could then lay on the bottom & detect.
Pretty easy to stay put on the bottom at the location.....
