Jeff - some believe that none of the original "direction trees" are still in existence. I tend to think there are still a few around and indeed there are some documented examples of trees thought to be original trail trees. The trees would have to be at least in the neighborhood of 200 years old. There is just not a lot of virgin timber to be found most places that old. In Ohio much of the state forests were planted during the depression by WPA because the virgin timber was destroyed by strip mining. Is the tree in your picture a slow growing hardwood? It looks like the pictures I've seen of direction trees.....sort of. Most of the examples I've seen depicted look like this...
